Murata Develops Industry's Tightest Tolerance Ceramic Resonators
Innovative Design Offers Smaller, Less Expensive Alternative to Quartz Crystal Resonators

Smyrna, GA, September 18, 2006 - Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global supplier of ceramic passive components, today introduced the industry’s tightest tolerance (+/- 500PPM) ceramic resonators. For use in Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 high speed (480Mbps) applications, Murata’s CSTCE series resonators give engineers a smaller (3.2mm x 1.3mm x 1.0mm), less expensive option when compared to similar sized quartz crystal resonators.

A result of Murata’s design expertise, the CSTCE ceramic resonator series can compete with quartz crystals’ tight tolerance capabilities (unlike standard ceramic resonators which only provide ~10000PPM in total tolerance).CSTCE Series Resonators In addition to the improved tight tolerance, reduced footprint and lower cost, ceramic resonators also offer built-in load capacitors (crystals do not), faster rise time, greater shock resistance of standard parts and no “drive level” concerns when matched against quartz crystal resonators.

“Murata’s pioneering technology and leadership in the resonator market is unsurpassed,” said Peter Tiller, senior group product manager of the device products group for Murata Electronics North America. “No other competitor can offer ceramic resonators with the quality and desired characteristics that Murata can.”

Murata’s CSTCE series ceramic resonators are custom frequency correlated to customers’ integrated circuits (ICs) and printed circuit boards (PCBs). They are available for the sample price of $0.48 (3K reel). Larger volume quotes and additional purchasing information can be found by contacting Murata sales representatives or authorized distributors. Lead time is stock to 10 weeks.
Murata's ceramic processing technology and unique piezo-electric material has led to the development of a range of small and thin ceramic resonators "CERALOCK", including the CSTCE series, which offer high oscillation frequency and remarkable oscillation tolerance. These products are designed for use as a stable timing source for microprocessors. Murata also offers SAW resonators for use at higher frequencies to complete the range of frequency control products.
