Murata Develops World's Smallest Microwave Switch Connector
SWF Series Radio Frequency Connector Meets Wireless Market and Design Engineers’ Needs for Miniaturized Components

Smyrna, GA, October 23, 2007 - Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global supplier of ceramic passive components, today introduced the world’s smallest Radio Frequency (RF), surface mount switch connector for wireless applications. SWF Series Microwave Switch ConnectorThe miniaturized ceramic component measures only 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.4 millimeters (mm) and is designed to reliably test microwave frequencies throughout a products development stage up to final production. The small footprint is ideal for cell phones, smart phones, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), Global Positioning Satellites (GPSs) and measurement equipment. The SWF series is also an excellent fit for advanced devices such as Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), WiMax, Ultra Wide Band (UWB), Bluetooth and Zigbee technologies.

In addition to its small size, the new switch connector’s test probes are compatible with the larger SWD series connectors. Therefore there is no need to change test probes when transitioning to the smaller SWF series, making it easier for engineers to incorporate the connector into designs. Other key features of the switch connector include its wide operating frequency from DC to 6GHz, which covers all the popular bands, to excellent performance abilities (insertion loss is 0.1dB maximum to 3GHz and high durability for engagement (100 cycles).

“To keep Murata’s competitive edge, we constantly strive to anticipate our customers’ needs by always evolving advanced components,” said Gerry Hubers, product manager, microwave connectors for Murata Electronics North America. “The minute SWF series switch connector exemplifies our commitment to exceed the expectations of the wireless market as its small size and quality characteristics benefit sophisticated mobile devices and the engineers who design them.”

The RoHS compliant SWF series (global part number: MM8130-2600RB8) is available for approximately 16 to 20 cents depending on order quantity. Lead time is approximately eight to ten weeks. Murata also offers test probes, manual probes for prototyping and production probes for use on the manufacturing line.
